Knjigarna Mariborka bookstore targeted by vandalism in Maribor

Knjigarna Mariborka, a bookstore in Maribor known for being friendly to the LGBT+ community and other minorities, has been targeted by vandals once again. Unknown perpetrators defaced the storefront on Koroška Street with red paint and markings, which also penetrated the interior of the premises.

Anja Zag Golob, editor-in-chief of the VigeVageKnjige foundation which owns the bookstore, described the incident as a hate crime. She noted that the use of red paint and the manner in which it was applied, covering the doors, pavement, and facade, resembled a crime scene. The bookstore has faced repeated attacks since 2024, leading to increased security measures during Pride Month.

The Municipality of Maribor issued a statement condemning the act, asserting that such behavior is unacceptable and has no place in the city, which must remain a place of respect and dialogue.
