KNMI tests localized thunderstorm warning feature

The Royal Netherlands Meteorological Institute (KNMI) has launched a beta test of a new feature in its mobile app designed to provide localized thunderstorm warnings. Running from August 24 to August 31, the feature uses a system called CellWarn to identify and track individual dangerous storm cells.

Unlike previous warnings that were issued on a provincial level, this new system alerts users when a severe thunderstorm is expected to reach their specific location within fifteen minutes. The alerts include a map and advice for the upcoming 15 and 60 minutes. This shift toward smaller, more precise warning areas follows changes to legal regulations intended to improve local accuracy.

In related weather developments, forecasts for the region indicate an increasing chance of thunderstorms, with yellow code warnings issued for certain areas. Meteorological patterns show a transition of fronts moving across the country, influenced by low-pressure systems and continental polar air.
