KNSB updates selection rules for speed skating competitions
The Royal Dutch Skating Federation (KNSB) has announced two major changes to its selection procedures for international competitions ahead of the post-Olympic season.
For individual distances, skaters can now qualify for the World Championships through the World Cup circuit. To qualify, a skater must be ranked in the top three of the international standings after four World Cups, have won at least one World Cup, and be the highest-ranked Dutch skater. This change may allow top athletes to skip the Dutch Championships in January to protect them from a dense competition schedule.
Additionally, the selection process for the men’s team pursuit is changing. Instead of being appointed by coach Rintje Ritsma, selection for the first two World Cups will be determined by the World Cup Qualification Tournament (WCKT). The winner of the WCKT will automatically join the World Cup circuit. Skaters will have the freedom to form their own teams, allowing for combinations of athletes from different commercial teams rather than just selecting the three best individuals.
