University unions in Nigeria and Ghana launch indefinite strikes

Multiple academic and administrative unions in Nigeria and Ghana have launched indefinite strikes over welfare disputes and unpaid entitlements.

In Nigeria, the Academic Staff Union of Universities (ASUU) has declared strikes at several institutions. At Imo State University (IMSU), the union is protesting the non-implementation of a 2025 agreement regarding improved welfare and conditions of service. Grievances include unpaid promotion arrears dating back to 2016, withheld salaries, and non-payment of Earned Academic Allowances. Similarly, ASUU at Adekunle Ajasin University (AAUA) in Ondo State has commenced an indefinite strike over unpaid salary arrears and the failure to implement the federal government-ASUU agreement. In Nasarawa State, ASUU at Nasarawa State University, Keffi (NSUK) has grounded academic activities, demanding N3bn in unpaid entitlements.

In Ghana, the Ghana Association of University Administrators (GAUA) has initiated an indefinite strike affecting the Kwame Nkrumah University of Science and Technology (KNUST). The non-teaching staff are protesting significant allowance disparities, noting that the highest-ranked administrators receive nearly 50% less than the lowest-ranked teaching staff. The strike has reportedly impacted administrative offices and university hospitals.
