KNUST ends election of Deans and Pro-Vice-Chancellors
The Governing Council of the Kwame Nkrumah University of Science and Technology (KNUST) has decided to end the long-standing practice of electing Deans and Pro-Vice-Chancellors. Under the new policy, these positions will be filled through appointment rather than faculty voting.
This governance shift comes less than a month after the investiture of a new Vice-Chancellor. Three major staff unions—the University Teachers Association of Ghana (UTAG), the Ghana Association of University Administrators (GAUA), and the Teachers and Educational Workers Union of the Trades Union Congress (TEWU-TUC)—have formally petitioned against the decision. The unions argue that the move removes the academic community's ability to participate in university governance and represents a transfer of power from the faculty to the central administration.
