KNUST to partner with Ghana ministry on local machinery and traffic light projects

The Kwame Nkrumah University of Science and Technology (KNUST) is set to partner with Ghana’s Ministry of Food and Agriculture to design and manufacture locally produced agricultural machinery. The initiative aims to reduce the nation's dependence on imported equipment and increase the integration of locally developed technologies into government projects.

During discussions between KNUST Vice-Chancellor Professor Christian Agyare and Deputy Minister for Food and Agriculture John Dumelo, the proposal to award more procurement contracts to Ghanaian universities was highlighted. Dumelo suggested that KNUST’s engineering departments lead the production of tools to address mechanization challenges faced by farmers nationwide.

Additionally, the partnership includes plans to develop locally manufactured smart traffic lights. This project, involving the university’s College of Engineering and College of Science, is intended to be piloted in the Ayawaso West Wuogon constituency in Accra, potentially serving as a model for similar systems across the country.
