KNVB to rename 'G-voetbal' to 'Voetbal+' after 40 years
The KNVB has announced that the term 'G-voetbal' will be replaced by 'Voetbal+' starting from the 2026/27 season. The decision comes after more than 40 years of using the original name.
Originally, the 'G' designation was chosen because football categories A through F already existed. The KNVB was the first football association globally to establish a structural competition for players with intellectual disabilities in 1984. Since then, the program has expanded to include over 5,000 players with various physical and intellectual needs.
Jan Dirk van der Zee, the KNVB's director-administrator of amateur football, stated that the new name better reflects the diversity of the current player base. The 'plus' in 'Voetbal+' signifies the additional support, attention, or environmental adjustments required by some participants to compete.
