Knysna police captain killed in shootout during murder investigation
A 50-year-old captain from the South African Police Service (SAPS) Tactical Response Team was killed during a shootout in Knysna early Wednesday morning. The operation was conducted in the Sewende Laan informal settlement on Uniondale Road following intelligence regarding illegal firearms.
The confrontation resulted in the death of a 38-year-old suspect, and two firearms were recovered from the scene. The captain was part of a provincial team deployed to investigate a series of violent incidents, including the recent murders of former Knysna mayor and councillor Aubrey Tsengwa, Mandla Matiwane, and Mandla Tyololo.
Western Cape Provincial Commissioner Lieutenant General Sizakhele Dyantyi expressed condolences to the family and colleagues of the deceased officer. SAPS has provided psychosocial support to the officers involved in the incident.
