Knysna property values surge as R100,000 homes reach R2.8 million
The property market in Knysna, located along South Africa’s Garden Route, has seen massive appreciation over the last 26 years. Real estate purchased for approximately R100,000 around the turn of the century is now valued at roughly R2.8 million, representing a 28-fold increase that significantly outpaces inflation.
In suburbs such as Old Place, properties that sold for less than R100,000 in 2000 have seen values rise by as much as 2,350%. This growth has shifted the market's entry point; the cheapest available land in Metelerkamp is currently priced at R695,000, while the least expensive existing home listed is a three-bedroom house in Rykmanshoogte at R1.65 million.
Recent data shows accelerated growth, with average sale prices rising 47.4% over the past five years. The average sale price has climbed from R1.9 million in 2021 to R2.8 million by late 2025. This surge is attributed to the town’s lifestyle appeal and its proximity to the growing population center of George.
