Ko Itakura Asian Cup participation under discussion by JFA

The Japan Football Association (JFA) is addressing reports regarding defender Ko Itakura potentially skipping the 2027 AFC Asian Cup to focus on his club, Borussia Mönchengladbach.

German media reports suggest that upon his return to Borussia Mönchengladbach this summer, Itakura indicated a willingness to forgo the tournament. While FIFA regulations grant national associations the right to call up players for continental championships, individual player intentions and specific club contract clauses may influence participation.

JFA Technical Committee Chairman Masakuni Yamamoto stated that the association maintains regular communication with Itakura. While noting that the JFA cannot interfere in private contracts between a player and their club, Yamamoto emphasized that the association will continue to pursue the possibility of his involvement, stating they will prepare in accordance with established rules.
