Öko-Test evaluates 32 facial creams, finding budget brands outperform luxury options

The German consumer magazine Öko-Test evaluated 32 rich facial creams intended for dry skin, analyzing ingredients, packaging sustainability, and the scientific validity of manufacturer claims. The testing revealed that higher prices do not guarantee superior quality or ingredient safety.

Out of the 32 products tested, 12 received the highest rating of ‘very good’ and 10 were rated ‘good’. Notably, all tested creams priced under five euros per 50ml achieved high ratings. In contrast, the four products with the lowest scores all cost more than 20 euros per 50ml.

Top-rated products receiving the ‘very good’ distinction include Balea reichhaltige Tagescreme (dm), Cien Tagespflege reichhaltig (Lidl), Alverde reichhaltige Tagescreme Bio-Wildrose (dm), and Alterra Aloe Vera Tagescreme (Rossmann).

A similar trend was observed in men's skincare, where affordable brands like Elkos for Men, Balea Men, and Joolea Men outperformed significantly more expensive options from brands such as Douglas Men and L'Oréal Men Expert.
