Öko-Test finds pesticide residues in conventional vegetable broths

A study by the consumer magazine Öko-Test on 27 different vegetable broths and bouillons has revealed significant issues with pesticide contamination in non-organic products. The investigation found that almost all broths containing vegetables from conventional farming contained at least one, and often multiple, pesticide residues. In one instance, traces of four different pesticides were detected.

Testers highlighted the risks of pesticide mixtures, noting that the interactions between different substances are not sufficiently researched. Specific substances identified include Difenoconazole, which is suspected of being carcinogenic, and Clothianidin and Pyraclostrobin, which are classified as potentially toxic to reproduction.

Beyond pesticides, the study criticized several products for high salt content exceeding 0.90 grams per 100 milliliters of prepared broth, as well as the use of added flavors and flavor enhancers. In contrast, organic products performed significantly better, with only two broths receiving the highest possible rating. The test included products from supermarkets, discounters, and drugstores, evaluating both powder and liquid forms.
