Kobarid prepares for competitive mayoral election

The municipality of Kobarid is preparing for a highly competitive mayoral election featuring six candidates. Current Mayor Marko Matajurc and prominent challenger David Rozman face competition from four additional candidates, including Kevin Berginc, Ljubo Obleščak, former mayor Robert Kavčič, and Darko Smrekar.

Key campaign issues include local development, infrastructure, and housing. Candidate Kevin Berginc has criticized the lack of progress regarding promised communal plots for young people. Ljubo Obleščak has proposed a multi-purpose hall in Drežnica and expanded tourism through facilities like a water park. Former mayor Robert Kavčič has emphasized the need for social cohesion and unity within the municipality.

On the administrative side, Mayor Matajurc has highlighted recent development projects, such as the Svino residential settlement and improvements to the Soča river navigation. A major ongoing investment is the construction of the Kobarid Center for Protection and Rescue, which aims to centralize emergency services and include a sub-regional warehouse and a helicopter landing pad to improve response times for the northern Primorska region.
