As a Category B rookie, McDonald is expected to undergo a gradual transition to Australian Rules football, with St Kilda's General Manager of Football, Lenny Hayes, stating that the club's short-term priority is helping him settle and adapt to the new sport.

Speculation has emerged regarding whether McDonald might return to play for his club, Crossmolina Deel Rovers, during the current club championship. While veteran player Aidan O’Shea suggested that McDonald could still return to the side, Crossmolina manager Brian Benson expressed caution, noting that any availability would ultimately depend on whether St Kilda permits him to play.
