Kobe University researchers develop ultra-lightweight aircraft coating

Researchers at Kobe University in Japan have developed an ultra-lightweight structural color coating that could significantly reduce weight in the aviation industry. Unlike traditional paints that rely on heavy pigments, this new material uses silicon nano-particles to create color through physical structure, similar to the mechanism found in peacock feathers.

By coating silicon nano-spheres in a silica shell, the research team led by Associate Professor Hiroshi Sugimoto has overcome previous technical hurdles such as color shifting or opacity issues. The resulting coating is approximately 1,000 times lighter than conventional paint. For a wide-body aircraft, this could reduce the weight of the coating from hundreds of kilograms to just a few hundred grams, potentially saving billions of dollars in fuel and operational costs.
