Kobe's Mikage district undergoes retail shifts amid construction
The Mikage Market area in Higashinada-ku, Kobe, is undergoing significant changes due to ongoing seismic reinforcement work on the Hanshin Mikage Station elevated tracks. While some businesses, such as the seafood shop Omiya and the establishment Mikage Sakaba Yumezo, are closing or have closed due to the construction, the market is launching new initiatives to support local commerce.
To encourage shopping, Mikage Market will sell premium gift vouchers starting October 1, 2026. These vouchers offer 7,500 yen worth of credit for 5,000 yen. Additionally, the 15th Mikage Local Sake Festival is scheduled for September 27, featuring local Nada sake tastings and food booths.
In nearby retail developments, the discount supermarket Sandy has opened a new Mikage branch under the JR elevated tracks. This marks the chain's second location in the Higashinada Ward.
