Koblenz urban trees face stress from extreme summer heat

Extreme summer temperatures and prolonged drought are placing significant stress on urban trees in Koblenz, Germany. While many trees remain healthy due to intensive care and telematics-monitored irrigation, some individual specimens are struggling.

In the Südallee area, a newly planted wild cherry tree has lost its leaves, though it has developed buds for regrowth next spring. Building Department official Prof. Dr. Andreas Lukas noted that while most trees are developing well thanks to regular watering and three-year development care, the transition from nurseries to new locations makes young trees particularly vulnerable.

Both established trees and newer ‘climate trees’ are showing signs of stress, including brown discoloration across the city. It remains uncertain whether these trees will recover in the spring or if some will perish.
