Kocaeli extends Akçaray tram line to Kartepe
The Kocaeli Metropolitan Municipality has extended the Akçaray tram line to Kartepe, enhancing the city's rail network. The project, completed in two stages, added 1.4 kilometers of track, including the Dumlupınar and Kartepe stops. This expansion increases the total line length from 17.3 to 18.7 kilometers and raises the total number of stops from 27 to 29.
In addition to the extension, a new coupling system has been implemented at 15 stations. This allows for double-set tram operations, effectively doubling the passenger capacity to 600 people per trip. The system, which serves approximately 65,000 passengers daily, now provides a continuous rail connection between İzmit and Kartepe.
The total cost for the two-stage project is reported to be 1.54 billion TL. The official inauguration ceremony was attended by Kocaeli Metropolitan Mayor Tahir Büyükakın, Kartepe Mayor Mustafa Kocaman, and other local officials.
