Kocaeli launches digital twin project for Dil Deresi water management

Authorities in Kocaeli have launched the ‘Stream Profile Extraction (Digital Twin) and Smart Water Management Project’ to protect the Dil Deresi stream and its tributaries. Led by the Provincial Directorate of Environment, Urbanization and Climate Change in collaboration with the Kocaeli Metropolitan Municipality, the initiative aims to use scientific data and innovative technologies to monitor water resources and improve environmental quality.

The project involves creating a digital twin of the stream by aggregating measurement and monitoring data from critical points. This digital model will allow for real-time tracking of water quality changes and the development of an early warning system to identify environmental risks at an early stage. Decisions regarding water resource protection will be based on this scientific data.

Multiple institutions are participating in this collaborative management model, including the ISU General Directorate, Kocaeli University’s Department of Environmental Engineering, Gebze Technical University’s Center for Climate Change Research, and the Eastern Marmara Development Agency. Beyond local management, the project seeks to strengthen sustainable water management against the effects of climate change and serve as a model for other watercourses.
