Kocaeli launches scientific study to protect monument trees

Kocaeli Metropolitan Municipality has launched a comprehensive scientific study to protect the city’s natural heritage by examining approximately 600 monument trees. In collaboration with experts from the Istanbul University-Cerrahpaşa Faculty of Forestry, the initiative aims to create a detailed health map of these trees to plan necessary maintenance and conservation efforts.

The inspection process involves visual and physical examinations, supplemented by acoustic tomography for specific trees. This non-destructive method uses sensors to analyze the speed of sound waves through the trunks, allowing experts to detect internal decay, dryness, cavities, or other biological and mechanical damage that is not visible from the outside.

The project, which is expected to last approximately two months, will cover various locations including Izmit Cumhuriyet Boulevard, Sekapark, and Başiskele Cuhane. Following the technical evaluations, a report will be submitted to the relevant protection board to determine urgent care needs and long-term preservation strategies to ensure both the longevity of the trees and public safety.
