Kocaeli launches bridge and road infrastructure projects
Kocaeli Metropolitan Municipality is launching a major infrastructure project on Ömer Türkçakal Boulevard in İzmit to improve transportation safety and mitigate flood risks. The project includes the construction of a 157-meter, six-span bridge over Kiraz Dere using prefabricated prestressed beams, alongside approximately 4.5 kilometers of connecting roads. To ensure seismic safety and address soil conditions, the project will utilize deep soil mixing, bored piles, and geofoam block filling. Traffic will continue to flow via the existing bridge during construction, with the new route taking over once completed. The old bridge site will later be repurposed for side roads and coastal use.
In support of regional road works, the municipality’s Solaklar Asphalt Production and Laboratory facility has significantly boosted output. Using local raw materials from the Kıyırlı Quarry, the plant produced 115,000 tons of asphalt in the first half of 2026, following a total production of 246,046 tons in 2025. This local production capacity serves both the metropolitan area and district municipalities.
Other regional infrastructure updates include asphalt paving in Kahramanmaraş’s Yeni Sanayi Sitesi and ongoing road maintenance in Şehitkamil. Additionally, the Kırık Tunnel project, which aims to shorten the Erzurum-Rize route by 33 kilometers, has reached 90% completion in excavation and support works.
