Kocaeli sulfuric acid plant proposal met with intense public protest

A public participation meeting regarding an Environmental Impact Assessment (EIA) for a proposed sulfuric acid plant in the Körfez district of Kocaeli was disrupted by intense local protests. The facility, planned by MODÜL Enerji Sanayi ve Ticaret Şirketi in the Kabakoz area, faced significant opposition from citizens who used whistles, sirens, and slogans to voice their disapproval.

The tension escalated to the point where officials and company representatives were forced to leave the Tütünçiftlik Cultural Center. Following their departure, participants signed a formal record stating that the meeting could not be conducted due to the protests. Local political figures, including Körfez Yeni Parti District Chair Yaprak Fidancı, announced intentions to initiate legal proceedings.

The proposed project involves constructing a facility on approximately 13,346 square meters of land, with a closed area of 2,621 square meters. The plant is intended to process roughly 65,399 tons of sulfur annually to produce approximately 2,000 tons of sulfuric acid.
