Kochan village declares partial state of emergency after heavy flooding

A partial state of emergency has been declared in the village of Kochan and along parts of the road connecting Kochan to Zhivetvo following severe torrential rains. The order was issued on August 24 by Satovcha Mayor Dr. Arben Mimenov.

The heavy rainfall, which lasted approximately ninety minutes on the afternoon of August 23, caused significant damage to both private property and public infrastructure. Flooding affected numerous homes, damaging ground floors, furniture, appliances, and tools. Agricultural areas were also heavily impacted, with many gardens destroyed and crops lost.

Infrastructure damage includes washed-out street surfaces, the collapse of at least four retaining walls, and clogged sewage systems. Large amounts of mud, stones, sand, and ballast have accumulated on the streets and the main road to Zhivetvo, hindering movement.

Emergency recovery efforts are underway, with municipal workers using excavators and trucks to clear debris. The municipal disaster protection headquarters has convened, and local authorities in Blagoevgrad have been notified of the situation.
