Kochi: Judge booked after minor son's Mercedes crash kills man

A 17-year-old boy, the son of an Additional District and Sessions Judge, is facing charges after a Mercedes-Benz he was allegedly driving struck a scooter in Cheranallur, Kochi. The collision, which occurred around 2:20 a.m. on Sunday on Container Road, killed 55-year-old Jayabalakrishnan, a local food stall owner, on the spot.

Following public outcry and protests by the victim's family regarding the initial release of the teenager on station bail, the Kerala High Court has granted permission for police to register a case against the judge. The legal action against the judicial officer stems from allegedly allowing his minor son to operate the vehicle, which is registered in the judge's name.

A Special Investigation Team (SIT) has been formed to probe the incident. Investigators recovered mobile phone footage suggesting the teenager was driving at high speed, reportedly while attempting to film a social media reel. While initial reports indicated the minor was not under the influence of alcohol, police have booked him under the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita for culpable homicide not amounting to murder and are seeking to cancel his bail through the Ernakulam District Sessions Court.
