Škoda: The evolution of the Czech automaker

Škoda has undergone a significant brand transformation, evolving from a manufacturer of perceived low-quality Eastern Bloc vehicles to an established player in the European automotive market. This shift was largely catalyzed by its acquisition by Volkswagen in 1991, which helped modernize production and improve the brand's image.

The company's origins date back to 1895, when Václav Laurin and Václav Klement founded a bicycle workshop in Mladá Boleslav. The business expanded into motorcycles before producing its first automobile, the Voiturette A, in 1905. Following a 1925 merger with the Škoda works in Pilsen, the foundation for the modern brand was established.

While the company maintained some international presence during the planned economy era with models like the Škoda 1000 MB, political and economic constraints within the Eastern Bloc eventually hindered its development. The brand's modern success is attributed to a combination of its long history, strategic shifts under Volkswagen, and the introduction of contemporary models.
