Škoda Vagonka and Ostravar announce workforce reductions
Dozens of employees at Škoda Vagonka in Ostrava are expected to lose their jobs. While the company denies that this constitutes mass layoffs, describing the move instead as capacity optimization, the decision follows warnings from Škoda Group leadership regarding a projected downturn in the industry around 2027.
In a separate development, the Ostravar brewery in Ostrava will see approximately 120 jobs disappear. Its owner, Pivovary Staropramen, announced plans to gradually cease beer production in Ostrava by 2027, relocating operations to its Smíchov brewery in Prague. The company cited declining beer consumption and rising costs as primary drivers for the shift.
These changes occur amid a complex labor market in the Moravian-Silesian Region. As of late September, the region recorded 55,205 job seekers, a figure that is higher than the same period last year despite a slight monthly decrease.
