Kłodawa Salt Mine halts underground waste storage project

The Kłodawa Salt Mine has suspended plans to use empty salt mine excavations for underground waste storage following significant local opposition. The company's management decided to halt the project to address growing concerns from residents and local officials regarding environmental and safety risks.

To resolve the dispute, the company has commissioned independent scientific assessments from the Polish State Geological Institute and the AGH University of Science and Technology. The proposed project involved the commercial disposal of up to 150,000 tons of waste annually, including 106 types of hazardous materials such as lead, cadmium, mercury, and potentially asbestos or pesticide packaging. Residents expressed fears regarding the safety of groundwater, the integrity of the salt deposit, and the impact on local salt production.
