Koen Schuiling appeals indecent exposure conviction in Zwolle
Former Groningen Mayor Koen Schuiling appeared in a Zwolle court on Wednesday for an appeal against a conviction for ‘indecent exposure’. The case stems from allegations that during his tenure as mayor, Schuiling engaged in inappropriate behavior while driving, including reports of being seen in his underwear and allegations of masturbating in his vehicle.
Schuiling has consistently denied the allegations of sexual misconduct. He maintains that his actions were related to medical issues, citing severe abdominal pain following a previous heart surgery and an appendectomy. He stated, “Due to my medical situation, I suddenly had severe abdominal pain. An attempt to combat the pain was interpreted as offensive by another road user. There was, of course, no such thing.”
During the proceedings, the court raised questions regarding discrepancies between Schuiling’s current testimony and previous statements. While earlier records suggested he might have removed his clothing, Schuiling denied this, claiming he was merely attempting to manage physical pain. The appeal seeks to overturn the initial fine and conviction.
