Kogi State allocates N1.8bn annually for pensioner welfare

The Kogi State Government is allocating approximately N1.8 billion annually to support pensioners, with N150 million released monthly to the Pension Commission. This initiative is part of an effort by Governor Ahmed Usman Ododo’s administration to ensure the prompt payment of salaries and pensions.

Onuh Edoka, the Special Adviser to the Governor on Labour Matters, stated that the administration has prioritized workers' welfare by implementing the new national minimum wage and providing a two-year tax holiday on the wage increase. Other measures include the payment of promotion arrears, leave bonuses, and hazard allowances for healthcare workers, as well as providing health insurance coverage for both employees and retirees.

To address outstanding gratuities, the state is in advanced discussions to secure a loan or bond facility. Additionally, the administration is planning massive recruitment into the state civil service to address a shrinking workforce caused by rising retirement rates.
