Koh Samui faces acute water shortage amid drought and peak tourism
The Thai island of Koh Samui is experiencing an acute water shortage as a prolonged drought and the El Niño weather pattern have reduced water production to about 40 % of normal capacity. The island’s reservoirs are largely emptied and the under‑sea pipeline from the mainland supplies only around 16,000 cubic metres of water per day, far below the estimated demand of roughly 34,000 cubic metres.
Authorities have begun rationing the supply, rotating distribution across different districts. Hotels and larger businesses are buying additional water delivered by tanker trucks. Thailand’s interior ministry has ordered emergency measures, including increasing the pipeline flow and repairing a damaged seawater‑desalination plant.
Koh Samui’s permanent population is about 70,000, but during the high‑season tourism boom an extra 400,000‑500,000 visitors are present, with more than four million tourists expected this year. Tourism operators are urging greater investment in water infrastructure to cope with the growing demand.
