Koh Tao and Koh Samui: Comparing Thailand's Gulf Islands

Koh Tao and Koh Samui offer distinct travel experiences within the Gulf of Thailand. Koh Tao is a smaller, 21 sq km adventure-focused island known for its hilly terrain, jungle trails, and affordable scuba diving certifications. Popular areas for visitors include Sairee Beach, which features restaurants, bars, and dive schools, and Mae Haad, the primary arrival point for ferries.

In contrast, Koh Samui is significantly larger at 229 sq km and offers more infrastructure, including an airport, hospitals, and shopping centers, giving it a feel more similar to mainland Thailand. While Koh Samui provides more developed amenities, Koh Tao is noted for its diverse activities such as hiking to viewpoints, snorkeling with blacktip reef sharks, and exploring secluded bays.
