Kohima officials clear decade-old drainage blockage near War Cemetery
A 450-metre-long drain near the Kohima War Cemetery, which had been blocked for over a decade, has been cleared. The operation was a coordinated effort involving the district administration, PWD (NH), Fire and Emergency Services, revenue officials, and residents of Midland Colony.
Deputy Commissioner Kohima B. Henok Buchem inspected the site on September 28, 2026. He noted that the long-term blockage had caused water to overflow onto roads and flow toward the New Market area. The clearance work took approximately three days following discussions between government departments and local colony representatives.
Officials emphasized that regular maintenance is required to keep the system functional. Buchem also called on the public to practice civic responsibility by using designated dustbins and avoiding the disposal of plastic bottles and food packets into drains to prevent future clogging.
