Kohima officials review anti-drug measures and report major seizures

During a District Level Narco Coordination Centre (NCORD) meeting in Kohima on October 22, officials reviewed strategies to strengthen grassroots enforcement and inter-departmental coordination against drug trafficking. Chaired by Deputy Commissioner B. Henok Buchem, the meeting addressed the evolving nature of substance abuse in the region.

Senior Superintendent of Police Krodi Rhetso reported that Kohima Police seized approximately 20,000 Yaba tablets this month. In separate operations, security forces also confiscated 302 grams of heroin and 6 kg of opium. Rhetso noted that while major trafficking routes have been identified, smugglers continue to utilize new methods and channels to transport contraband.

Abou Mere, director of the Kripa Foundation, discussed the psychological drivers of addiction, including depression, low self-esteem, and a desire for instant gratification. He noted that drug addiction has expanded from affluent groups in the 1980s to affect all socioeconomic classes today, including uniformed personnel and daily wage earners. The Home Department is currently working with the Kripa Foundation to rehabilitate law enforcement officers affected by substance abuse.
