Košice City Council rejects Šaca secession petition and approves property transfer

The Košice City Council has addressed two significant municipal matters involving territorial administration and property management.

Regarding local governance, the council acknowledged a petition from the Šaca district, which received 1,098 signatures. The petition expressed opposition to the merging of Šaca with other city districts and requested a local referendum on the separation of Šaca from Košice. However, the council rejected the proposal for secession, citing a ruling by the Constitutional Court of the Slovak Republic. The ruling indicates that the city of Košice holds primary self-governing authority and that any city-wide restructuring would require a referendum involving the entire city's population rather than just the affected district.

In a separate decision, the council approved the transfer of municipal real estate into the assets of the company Nájomné bývanie Košice, s. r. o. This non-monetary contribution includes various land plots in locations such as Staré Mesto, Dargovskí hrdinovia, and Juh, with a total estimated value of nearly 9 million euros. This move is part of a joint venture between the City of Košice and the Viennese company WBG Wohnen und Bauen Gesellschaft mbh, aimed at developing rental housing projects.
