Košice named finalist for 2028 European Green Capital award
The Slovak city of Košice has been selected as one of five finalists for the European Green Capital 2028 competition. It will compete with Aalborg (Denmark), Bielsko‑Biała (Poland), Porto (Portugal) and Zaragoza (Spain). The city will host a public event on 1–2 August in the city centre, inviting residents to a parade and presentations about the award.
Mayor Jaroslav Polaček said the achievement reflects years of investment and expert evaluation, highlighting projects such as park and inner‑block renewal, green roofs, improved rain‑water management, energy‑efficient municipal buildings, sustainable transport, revitalised public spaces and new fountains. Climate‑adaptation measures are emphasized as heat waves are expected to bring temperatures up to 37 °C, with the city advising vulnerable groups to follow heat warnings, stay hydrated and use shaded or water‑misted areas.
These initiatives aim to boost the city’s resilience to climate change and improve quality of life for its inhabitants.
