Košice National Opera brings ‘Krútňava’ to Slovak National Theatre

The Košice National Opera is hosting a production of Eugen Suchoň’s opera ‘Krútňava’ at the Slovak National Theatre (SND) on September 9 and 10. Directed by Vera Nemirova and musically prepared by Peter Valentovič, the production presents the national opera as a psychological thriller involving crime, jealousy, and conscience.

Originally composed by Suchoň over a nine-year period, the work was inspired by a novella by Miloslav Urban. While the opera achieved international success following its 1949 premiere, the composer faced political challenges from the Communist regime regarding the work's religious references and somber atmosphere.
