Košice water quality changes amid Slovak drought

Residents in Košice, Slovakia, have reported significant changes in the taste and quality of tap water, with some describing a chlorine-like smell and white residue in kettles. The Východoslovenská vodárenská spoločnosť (VVS) explained that due to a prolonged period of drought and unfavorable hydrological conditions, the company has shifted water distribution in certain city districts. Areas previously supplied primarily by surface water sources are now being supplied from underground water sources to ensure availability.

In a related context regarding the regional drought, Greenpeace Slovensko has welcomed government compensation for farmers and the establishment of the National Commission for Water and Drought. However, the organization is urging the government to move beyond reactive compensation and focus on long-term systemic measures. Greenpeace advocates for strategies to retain water within the landscape, such as revitalizing watercourses, to mitigate the effects of the climate crisis and prevent further degradation of water resources.
