Koji Kosei wins Okinawa gubernatorial election
In the Okinawa gubernatorial election held on September 13, former Naha Deputy Mayor Koji Kosei defeated incumbent Denny Tamaki to become the prefecture’s new governor. Kosei secured approximately 59 percent of the vote, marking a significant victory for the Liberal Democratic Party and other supporting parties. At 42 years old, Kosei is the youngest governor ever elected in Okinawa.
The election results signal a shift in local political priorities. While opposition to U.S. military installations has historically dominated Okinawan politics, exit polls indicated that economic revitalization was the primary concern for nearly half of the voters, while base-related issues were prioritized by only 20.9 percent.
The outcome has significant geopolitical implications for regional defense and the U.S.-Japan alliance. Kosei has expressed acceptance regarding the relocation of the Futenma air station to Henoko. This shift may transform the relationship between the central Japanese government and Okinawa from one of confrontation over military presence toward a partnership focused on economic development and regional security coordination.
