Kokoli, Nigeria: 20 killed in intercommunal violence

At least 20 people were killed during an attack on the village of Kokoli in the Borgu district of central-west Nigeria on August 14, 2026. The violence has forced hundreds of residents to flee or seek refuge.

Local accounts suggest the clashes involved the Kambari and Fulani ethnic groups. However, regional deputy Jafar Muhammed stated that the killings may have been carried out by local militias. The area, located near the border with Benin, frequently experiences violence from armed groups involved in cattle theft, looting, and kidnapping, as well as threats from jihadist organizations. Muhammed has called for increased military deployment, noting that current security responses are insufficient to protect local communities.
