Kokoomus proposes 120 million euro cut to Yle funding
Suna Kymäläinen, a member of the Yleisradio (Yle) administrative council, has criticized a proposal by the National Coalition Party (Kokoomus) to implement an additional 120 million euro cut to Yle's funding during the next parliamentary term.
Kymäläinen, representing the Social Democratic Party (SDP), warned that such significant cuts threaten Yle's operations and the overall vitality of the Finnish media landscape. She noted that because Yle's funding is derived from the public broadcasting tax, a 120 million euro reduction would not result in a corresponding increase in public finances.
The proposed cuts could lead to substantial reductions in staff, news and current affairs content, cultural programming, regional services, and domestic audiovisual production. Kymäläinen suggested the move may be driven by ideology rather than economic necessity, arguing it aligns with the Orpo government's broader trend of weakening democratic and civil society foundations.
