Kokuho explores the intense world of Kabuki theater
The Japanese historical drama ‘Kokuho’, directed by Sang-il Lee, explores the intense world of Kabuki theater. Based on the 2018 novel by Shuichi Yoshida, the film follows Kikuo, a young man who, after the death of his father, is taken in by a famous Kabuki actor, Hanjiro Hanai. Kikuo and Hanai’s son, Shunsuke, undergo rigorous training as they navigate a competitive environment defined by ambition and sacrifice.
The film has achieved significant success, earning approximately ¥20 billion at the domestic box office and receiving an Academy Award nomination for Make Up and Hairstyling. To ensure authenticity, lead actors Ryo Yoshizawa and Ryusei Yokohama underwent specialized training to perform the Kabuki acts themselves rather than using doubles.
