Kolben ski resort in Oberammergau ends winter operations

The Kolben ski resort in Oberammergau has announced the end of its traditional winter sports operations after 15 years. Operators cited climate change as the primary driver, noting that precipitation in the region south of Munich and Augsburg is increasingly falling as rain rather than snow.

Financial difficulties have also contributed to the decision. The resort reported losses exceeding one million euros over the past three winters. Operators noted that since the 2019/2020 season, winter operations have become a deficit-generating business due to rising energy costs for electricity and diesel, increased personnel requirements, and the need for expensive technical investments to produce snow in shorter windows of sub-zero temperatures.

Environmental factors, including low water levels in the Ammer river which restricted water extraction for snow cannons, further complicated operations. The decision follows a similar move by the Berchtesgadener Bergbahn, which ceased classic skiing at Jenner last season to conserve resources and adapt to changing snow conditions.
