Kolkata and Dhaka brace for heavy rain and thunderstorms on July 31, 2026

The India Meteorological Department’s Regional Meteorological Centre in Kolkata warned of intense thunderstorms and heavy rain across the city on Friday, July 31, 2026. The most severe spell is expected between 10:30 a.m. and 1:30 p.m., with a 60‑65% chance of heavy downpours and lightning. Temperatures could reach 31 °C, feeling up to 40 °C, while humidity may approach 90%. Nearby districts in northern West Bengal, including Darjeeling, Kalimpong, Jalpaiguri and Alipurduar, have been placed under heavy‑to‑very‑heavy rain alerts, with landslide risk noted in mountainous areas.

In Bangladesh, the national weather service reported mostly sunny conditions in Dhaka on the same day, though partial clouds and isolated thunderstorms are possible. Several divisions—Rangpur, Mymensingh, Khulna, Barisal, Chittagong, Sylhet, as well as parts of Dhaka and Rajshahi—could see moderate to heavy rain. Temperatures are expected to max out at 30.4 °C with a low of 25 °C. No flood or river‑bank warnings were issued.
