Kolkata building collapse causes death and injuries

A building collapse in the Jorabagan area of Kolkata, triggered by heavy rainfall, has resulted in at least one fatality and multiple injuries. The incident involved an older structure, with reports describing it as a 200-year-old building.

One person, identified as 50-year-old Urmila Sau, died in the collapse. Rescue teams, including the National Disaster Response Force (NDRF) and local disaster management, responded to the scene. While one report indicates 15 individuals were injured and transported to medical facilities, another report states that 10 people, including women and children, were safely evacuated from the debris.

The Kolkata Municipal Corporation had previously declared the building structurally unsafe, though some residents had continued to occupy the premises. Authorities have sealed the site and evacuated adjacent buildings due to ongoing stability concerns. An investigation into the circumstances of the collapse is underway.
