Kolkata building collapse in Sovabazar leaves two rescued

A section of the balcony and roof of an old building collapsed on Friday afternoon in the Sovabazar area of North Kolkata. The incident occurred at 66, Raja Nabakrishna Street, located within a lane.

Local residents rescued two occupants from the building immediately following the collapse. While there is no immediate indication that anyone else is trapped inside, state fire services and disaster management teams are using sniffer dogs to search the debris for potential pedestrians who may have been caught underneath.

Residents noted that the building was in a dilapidated state and had previously been marked as dangerous by the Kolkata Municipal Corporation (KMC). Recent persistent rainfall and subsequent waterlogging in the city are believed to have weakened the structure. Authorities intend to investigate the specific cause of the collapse.
