Kolkata stampede kills 19 at Durga Puja festival

A deadly stampede at the Chorbagan Sarbojanin Durga Puja pandal in North Kolkata has resulted in at least 19 deaths and left approximately 25 to 40 people injured. The incident occurred on the evening of October 17, triggered by sudden heavy rainfall and a subsequent commotion caused by an announcement, which led crowds to rush toward the pavilion for shelter.

Among the deceased is a seven-year-old girl. Authorities have detained at least 12 individuals, including festival organizers and security personnel, as part of an investigation into negligence. West Bengal Chief Minister Suvendu Adhikari has announced the formation of a Special Investigation Team (SIT) led by a sitting High Court judge to probe the tragedy.

In response to the disaster, Prime Minister Narendra Modi announced compensation of 200,000 rupees for the next of kin of the deceased and 50,000 rupees for each injured person. The West Bengal government has pledged 2.5 million rupees in compensation and a government job for one member of each deceased victim's family. Union Home Minister Amit Shah visited the injured at Apollo Hospital to offer support.
