Kolkata Metro Purple Line Tunnel Boring Machine Breakthrough Reaches Victoria Station
On 10 July 2026, the tunnel boring machine (TBM) named Durga completed a breakthrough at the proposed Victoria Metro station, concluding a one‑year tunnelling effort that began at Kidderpore on 10 July 2025. The event was attended by Metro Railway officials, the Consul General of Nepal, Kolkata municipal and police commissioners, and senior executives from L&T and Rail Vikas Nigam Limited. Following the breakthrough, the TBM will continue beneath the Kolkata Maidan toward Park Street, advancing the underground segment of the 18.84‑km Purple Line that will ultimately link Joka with Esplanade.
The Purple Line combines an operational elevated stretch from Joka to Majerhat with the underground section from Majerhat to Esplanade. Once the corridor is fully operational, Esplanade will become Kolkata’s first interchange station connecting three metro lines, improving connectivity for lakhs of commuters along Diamond Harbour Road and surrounding areas.
