Mamata Banerjee's faction challenges Kolkata rally ban in Calcutta High Court

The Mamata Banerjee‑led faction of the Trinamool Congress has petitioned the Calcutta High Court to overturn a police advisory that imposes a 60‑day prohibitory order on gatherings of four or more people in front of the CESC House near Esplanade Crossing. The advisory, issued under Section 163 of the Bharatiya Nagarik Suraksha Sanhita, bars the traditional venue for the party’s annual Martyrs’ Day rally scheduled for July 21. Kolkata Police suggested the Brigade Parade Ground as an alternative, which the faction rejected, insisting on the historic location. The court heard the petition on July 15 and has asked the state government to clarify its position on the venue before the next hearing. The faction’s counsel described the order as “arbitrary” and contrary to fundamental rights, while a rival Trinamool faction led by Ritabrata Banerjee has secured permission for a separate rally at the Mahatma Gandhi Statue on Jawaharlal Nehru Road.
