Kolkata port hoists one of the city’s tallest national flags

The Syama Prasad Mookerjee Port Authority (SMPA) has hoisted a 60-metre-high flag post at the Netaji Subhas Dock in Kolkata. As part of the ‘Har Ghar Tiranga’ initiative, the installation features a 30 ft × 20 ft Indian Tricolour, making it one of the tallest national flags in the city.

The permanent installation is designed to last 25 years and consists of a 20-sided polygonal high-tensile steel shaft supported by a reinforced concrete pile foundation. The flag is operated via a motorised double-drum winch system.

Located next to a historic clock tower installed in 1899, the flag stands at India’s oldest operational riverine major port, which began operations in 1870. The Netaji Subhas Dock, originally commissioned in 1928, has historical significance dating back to World War II operations.
