Kolkata to launch app‑based digital parking system to curb illegal parking
State Municipal Affairs and Urban Development Minister Agnimitra Paul announced that Kolkata will soon introduce an app‑based digital parking system aimed at ending illegal parking and cash‑based transactions. The Kolkata Municipal Corporation has identified about 15,000 parking spaces within its jurisdiction, with 10,000 already listed, and the police are developing the mobile app. Parking fees will be collected through the app, and staff at each lot will wear uniforms and carry photo IDs. Vehicles will be required to park only in designated spaces, and sidewalk parking will be prohibited.
The initiative follows a December 2023 announcement by Mayor Firhad Hakim, which was delayed for various reasons. The new system is intended to bring transparency, reduce extortion, and streamline enforcement across the city.
